Ajdarbay Mosque Baku, Azerbaijan

Ajdarbay Mosque was built a century ago by the famous philanthropist Haji Ajdarbek Ashurbekov. After the October Revolution, it was closed, but in the 1940s resumed its activities. However, in recent years, both the external and internal appearance of the mosque required a lot of money. A few years ago, by order of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, funds were allocated from the Presidential Reserve Fund and the overhaul of the mosque began.

LOCATION

Initially, Ajdarbay (Azhdarbek) Mosque was called the Union Mosque as a symbol of the Muslim community, and then was called the Ajdarbay Mosque. At the same time, the dome of the temple is blue, it is known as the “Blue Mosque”.

In Soviet times, the Ajdarbay mosque was also subjected to repression, but after the Second World War it was again used by believers.

About 3,000 people can worship in the Ajdarbay Mosque at the same time. The total area of 4000 square meters. In the courtyard of the mosque there is a special area for worship. The so-called “Eternal” (Əndərun) is covered with movable ceilings, as in the “Mosque of the Prophet” in Medina. Walls and columns are written in verses from the Holy Quran and decorated with religious symbols. Rare samples of the Azerbaijani school of embroidery and oriental ornaments were used on the walls and under the dome.

It should be noted that Haji Ajdarbek Ashurbekov, having built a mosque, emphasized that the mosque was built for everyone and Shiites with Sunnis should pray here together. This tradition has survived to this day. Currently, Muslims of both movements pray together in the mosque.
