The building of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater was built in 1910 by the famous civil engineer Bayev. Like in other works national architecture of the early XX century, in it you can find elements of Baroque, Rococo and features of the Moorish style. On 18.10.1918, the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic decided to buy this building and officially turn it into a state theater.
In 1928, the theater was named after M.F.Akhundov, and since 1959 it became known as the Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.
The development of the national opera is closely linked to the name of one of the outstanding composers of the 20th century, the founder of Azerbaijani professional music, Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who created the first in East opera, Leyli and Majnun in 1908.
