The history of the creation of the Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception – Roman Catholic church in Baku is associated with the name of Heydar Aliyev. In 2002, during a historic visit to Baku by Pope John Paul II, Heydar Aliyev transferred to the Catholic community of Azerbaijan the territory on which the construction of the new Baku Catholic church was completed in February 2007.

The first mention of Catholics in Azerbaijan, according to archival data, dates back to 1840. In 1909-1912, thanks to the efforts of the Polish community under the leadership of the architect Ploško, a Roman Catholic Cathedral was erected in Baku in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known among the Baku people as the “Polish Church”.

After the establishment of Soviet power in Azerbaijan, in 1920 the Bolsheviks began a struggle with religion. Along with the Bibi-Heybat mosque, which had a huge influence on Muslim, the Baku Orthodox Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky, oppression of the Catholic Church also began and in 1931 the Baku Catholic church was completely destroyed.

The Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception was designed in a modern style with neo-Gothic elements. Above the entrance to the temple is a statue of the Blessed Virgin by local sculptors.
The rite of consecration of the temple was performed on April 29, 2007 by the Apostolic Nuncio in the Transcaucasus, Monsignor Claudio Gugherotti.

The Baku Catholic church, financed by the State of Vatican, was built by Azerbaijan’s «A+A» Group Of Companies on the design of professor of Naples University Pado Ruggiero and Baku’s Chief City Architect Akif Abdullayev.

“This project was born in my mind and was inspired by the Almighty as a gift to the people of this country,” said architect Paulo Rujeiro, author of the project of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, at the opening ceremony. According to him, this project was born gradually over 10 years, visiting Azerbaijan, and the peculiar architecture of Baku had a great influence on its preparation.

The modern style Church, with 1256 sqm area has been equipped with necessary heating, ventilation, fire-extinguishing systems.
Simultaneously, about 250-300 people can worship in the Baku Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception.
