Azerbaijan State Puppet Theater

An elegant palace in the late Baroque style, now known as the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theater named after Abdullah Shaig, was built in 1910 according to the project of the famous Baku architector Joseph Ploshko. Initially, the building was intended for the casino/cinema, because its architectural fronton was decorated with four sculptures of the ancient Greek god’s Mercury, Bacchus, Poseidon, and Aphrodite.

The theater was originally created in the form of a troupe at the conservatory in 1931, and received the official status of the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theater named after Abdullah Shaig in 1965, after which it moved to the building in which it still functions today.

The repertoire of the collective is the most versatile. Among the performances are works by Azerbaijani and foreign classics, modern playwrights and, of course, productions based on Azerbaijani folk tales. The theater has Russian and Azerbaijani troupes, which plays a big role in its accessibility to a wide audience. During the year, performances are attended by 60-70 thousand people.

At the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theater named after Abdullah Shaig prices for performances are standardly 3 manat.
